My Favorite
Sock Pattern

by Bonne Marie Burns

Just your basic lovable slightly higher than average everyday sock...

Size
Women's - One Size (fits Medium foot)

Yarn
400 yds Sockweight Yarn (sample used OPAL Sock Yarn)

Gauge
9 sts / 12 rows over 1" Stockinette Stitch

Needles (your choice)
Size #1 (2.25 mm): 4-double-point needles or 2-circular needles or 1-long circular needle

I like to use 1-long circular needle to knit my sock with the Magic Loop technique.

This pattern originally was found on a little piece of cardboard you see on the left that I carried around in my parka pocket with a sock-in-progress. Here's the interpreted version that I'm using today on all my favorite socks! :)

Cuff
Cast on 68 stitches (sts). Distribute as necessary for needle technique used and join to knit in the round, being careful not to twist sts.

Work 2x2 ribbing [k2, p2] for 18 rounds (1.5").

Leg
Knit 76 rounds (~6.33" - total length from cast-on to this point = 7.83").

Heel Flap
Work 34 sts for heel flap as follows, reserving remaining 34 sts for sock instep.

Row 1 (RS): *slip 1 purlwise, k1; repeat from * across.
Row 2 (WS): slip 1 purlwise; purl across.

Repeat these two rows 15 times then Row 1 once.

Turn Heel
Row 1 (WS): p19, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 2 (RS): sl1, k5, k2tog, k1, turn.
Row 3: sl1, p6, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 4: sl1, k7, k2tog, k1, turn.
Row 5: sl1, p8, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 6: sl1, k9, k2tog, k1, turn.

Continue in this manner until all heel sts have been worked as above, ending with a RS row.

Gusset
With RS facing, starting right after turned heel sts, pick up 17 sts along left side of heel flap through slipped sts, knit 1 st from reserved instep sts, place marker; then knit across 32 instep sts, place marker, knit last instep st, then pick up 17 sts along other side of heel flap and knit half of the heel sts. Distribute remaining sts so the beginning of round is now at center back heel.

Decrease for gusset as follows:
Round 1: knit to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, slip marker; knit 32 instep sts, slip marker; ssk, k to end.
Round 2: knit.

Repeat Rounds 1 & 2 until 68 sts remain.

Foot
Knit 72 rows total counted from gusset pick-up row or 7.5", measured from center point of back of heel. (You can adjust your sock here so it measures 2" less than the desired finished foot length you need.)

Toe Shaping
Distribute sts so 34 instep sts are on first needle and remaining 34 sts for foot are on needle(s) as necessary, placing a hanging-type marker at beginning of round and after 34 instep sts. (Right edge of instep becomes beginning of round - knit to to this point if necessary, depending on needle technique used.)

Next Round – DEC Round: *k1, ssk, k to 3 sts before marker, k2tog, k1; rep from * once.

Rep DEC round every 3rd round, 3 times
then every other round, 4 times
then every round, 3 times.

Graft remaining stitches to close toe.

Weave in all ends.
