Bravo #22!

Hey Chicago,
what do you say
The Cubs are
gonna win today.

They're singing ...
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.

They got the power, they got the speed
To be the best in the National League
Well this is the year and Cubs are real
So come on down to Wrigley Field

We're singing now ...
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.

Brush with Dame
I met Carmen Electra (aka Tara Leigh Patrick) in the hallway after an interview she did at a radio station upstairs from our TV station.

She is really TINY - about 5'3! And looks absolutely fabulous with NO make-up - the absence of which is why I suspect her *handler* turned down the TV interview.

Monday Morning Mirth

da Toilet Bowl...

I'm not really a football fan, but my daily travels take me up and down the Drive. That would be Lake Shore Drive; LSD to the locals.

Soldier Field, home of da Bears, has been parked in an old concrete stadium on LSD for years!

Now the Bears have a new home.

The Monster of the Midway.

The Mistake on the Lake.

But my question is: where do the Grabowski's sit? The Die-Hards. Da guys who won't be able to afford the sky boxes that take up half of the stadium.

And if it isn't ugly enough, the boxes are seperated by AIR from the People's Side. That's right; 2 distinct sections. It's like the halves of two stadiums crash-landed on the facade of the old.

One for Them.

One supposedly for US.

I guess the Grabowski's got kicked to the curb with the 3,500 seats that were lost to make room for the Sky Boxes...

That's what I call Playin' Ugly...

But, hey, watch tonight as we FLUSH the Packers!!!

Chocolat, yyyumm...

I'm a big fat cheater! That's right, I've completely stalled out on that Poesie top, even though I want to wear it Saturday. Maybe I'll finish it Saturday...

Instead, I've started a Sitcom Chic cardie in Jo Sharp DK wool. The color is the darkest brown - almost black and it is the old stuff. I found it at half-off somewhere and could not resist. I'd never tried this before because I was living through a smaller gauge phobia but VoilA! The fear is GONE!

22sts per 4 inches on #6 needles is wonderful. Easy. Fast. I adjusted the gauge throughout and it is coming out wonderfully...

I blame my ongoing love affair with sock knitting for the gauge reality check. I am also knitting something with #8 needles and they feel like clubs!

And, I love this yarn! Maybe it's because it's wool ("extra long and fine Australian Merino Border Leicester fibres are used to make this naturally soft, comfortable wearing yarn. Before spinning, inferior short fibres which can cause piling and itching are removed to enhance softness and performance") and I haven't knit with wool in what seems like ages, but this yarn is VERY nice...

Just speeds on the needles - I knit 3 rows short of a whole sleeve at the Bucktown Yard Sale Saturday while manning our booth with my buddies. The Bucktown was a great success for the Park programs and us! It is every April and October, so if you are in the neighborhood, you can join in and support your local performing arts, for kids and adults! WHO doesn't have stuff to get rid of? And there were crafts people as well...

But, I'm in love with this sweater and want to have it done by October 20th, when I go on vacation for a week up in Michigan.

Chocolat & Sprinkles

Can't leave well enough alone? Why would ya wanta...

When the sweater you want to make is in a completely different yarn and gauge, why do the intelligent thing and just back off.

Because that's no FUN!

This little pattern originally was done in sport weight yarn and had set-in sleeves. I had worsted weight yarn and decided it would look better with raglan sleeves. The yoke was the only colorful part of the original - I am making the sleeves and yoke in this yummy Dzined Yarns handpaint.

Cuffs, collar, and body are a cinnamon brown (hmmm, brown - the favorite color choice for fall or what?) with triple cables facing the front edges. The rest of the pattern is ribbing formed by columns knit stitch alternated with columns of moss stitch instead of purling. The funny thing is that it still is stretchy!

I am only going to lightly steam the cables and not block the rest of the piece to retain its stretchy goodness.

Give Peace a Chance

When I've been really, really nervous
I've been knitting this sock. The
colors are very soothing to me

It is time to put my enemies behind me. This is proving easier said than done but I believe if I keep believing it, it will happen.

It was standing room only last night at the Beat 1322 CAPS monthly meeting. CAPS stands for Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy. I met our Beat Team Leader, Sgt Clas, when I went to the District House after the shooting and begged for help from anyone I could get to listen. He invited me to the monthly meeting and said I would feel a lot better if I came out and joined the neighbors who are standing up to the fear that randomly slams its way around the blocks.

He was right. Not only did I get a warm welcome, but I learned more in the process than a hundred individual visits to the precint house.

I also found whole groups of multi-ethnic people who had come together to fight the gang plague lurking in their building, their stoops, their alleys. I met our Beat Facilitator and my neighbors two doors down, and many other feisty, brave people.

Our Alderman (City Councilman) was there as well - he spoke of how the involvement of a CAPS participant directly led to the capture of a pair of serial rapists in our community. An attack actually started in front of his house and he went outside and surprised the attackers, who fled, but not before Our Guy got the plate number of their car.

Geez, this stuff works when regular people ARE NOT AFRAID to get involved. The Bad Guys get just as scared as us; the difference is that they get high on the experience while you and I just sweat bullets...

Three-quarters of the way through the meeting, an announcement was made. There had been an arrest made in the drive-by shooting two weekends ago and the case would be up in court next week. THIS WAS MY BUSINESS! They got the shooter! I didn't even have to bring it to the table because myself and another man gave clear and present descriptions and pictures to the cops.

WOOHOO!!! If I hadn't gone to the meeting, I never would've had this information. We were all urged to get as many people together to attend the trial to stare this person DOWN and represent OUR turf.

I guess I can reset my Fear Factor Gauge to zero again...

SIDEBAR: the problem house next door is up for sale. Somehow, my friend Eddie the owner, has gotten the bad family to move out, and has decided to get rid of the place because he can't keep an eye on it. His elderly father and uncle will go live with him in his new place.

So I lose three sets of neighbors, some bad and some dear- Eddie's folks and my neighbors downstairs who are selling their house because of the shooting.

Happy Dance No More Rants! Now all it has to do is get WARM ENOUGH TO WEAR IT.

This fall in Chicago has been unreasonably unseasonably schizophrenic. Cold before its time. Just like summer was :)
